DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
The Environmental Engineering Department of the Nigde University launched education in 1999 by recruiting its first graduate students, and then undergraduate students recruited in 2009-2010 academic year.
The Bachelor’s Degree Programme of the Department of Environmental Engineering, a 4-year programme including 8 semesters, offers 240 ECTS credits by giving 30 ECTS workload in each semester. One ECTS equals to 30 hours of student workload per semester. The department has a young, dynamic and competent academic staff including 3 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 4 Assistant Professors and 2 Research Assistants.
The department consists of 2 divisions: Environmental Technology and Environmental Sciences. Furthermore, a number of projects supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, State Planning Organization, Nigde University Research Project Unit, etc. are carried out by the research groups in the department.
In this programme, freshmen take basic courses like physics, chemistry, and mathematics in addition to courses underlying Environmental Engineering. Sophomores take professional courses in addition to some engineering formation courses such as Engineering mathematics and differential equations. Juniors who complete studying the fundamentals of Environmental Engineering concentrate on their future professional areas by choosing related courses from the divisions of Environmental Technology and Environmental Sciences. Senior students who pass their fourth year courses and thesis graduate with a degree in Environmental Engineering.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of our programme is to solve the existing environmental problems with the understanding of continuous improvement on the scientific and practical researches and to shed light on the production of knowledge and technologies in the future, to educate qualified and well-trained environmental engineers who will solve the environmental problems faced by the country and represent Turkey in international levels of studies.
The main objectives of the department are to educate Environmental Engineers who are with professional and ethical responsibility of environmental problems and can analyze, synthesize, design for the requirements. They are expected to monitor and develop scientific and technological developments, to have the management and business application skills, able to work in national and international environment, to contribute to the development of the country, to be successful in communication, and to have the creativity, self –confidence and self-renewing ability. They will contribute to the development of science and technology by performing basic and applicable scientific research. By producing solutions to problems related to environmental engineering, they will also share those issues in regional, national and international levels.
Level of Qualification and Qualification Awarded
Upon successful completion of this programme, students are awarded with the qualification of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING.
A Bachelor's Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering is a 240 ECTS Credits, 4-year programme. The programme meets the requirements by both the ECTS credits and level descriptors of the first cycle degree qualifications of the Overarching Framework of European Qualifications Framework HE(QF-EHEA) and the 6th level qualifications of the Turkish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TYYÇ, NQF-HETR). The level descriptors also meet the 6th level requirements of the qualifications of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL).
Specific Admission Requirements
Admission of national students to the Environmental Engineering programme is contingent on success on the nationally centralized Student Selection Examination (OSYS) conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). Candidates who succeed in the LYS examination (Undergraduate Placement Examination) are enrolled depending on their type MF-4 score preferences.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning
With an understanding of lifelong learning, Nigde University recognizes the previously taken courses in another institution and exempts them from graduation credit, as long as the courses match with the learning outcomes of the registered programme at Nigde University. The match of learning outcomes and the exemption are decided by the Faculty Board in line with the related laws and regulations.
Profile of the Programme
Environmental Engineering Department has been established with a mission to provide the students with a high quality programme to follow and learn cutting edge technologies and at the same time to participate actively in applied and theoretical research.
The undergraduate programme is designed in accordance with a cooperative education strategy and an understanding of hands-on experience, so that the new trends in the technology can be adapted easily. The programme constitutes the foreground in the fields of Environmental Technology and Environmental Science. Thus it is aimed to provide the students the skills to apply the knowledge of mathematics, fundamental sciences and engineering to Environmental Engineering problems; to understand different areas of Environmental Engineering and to specialize at least in one of them; and to participate in creative and integrative design activities as well.
Undergraduate (Bachelor's Degree) programme in Environmental Engineering (First Cycle in QF-EHEA and 6th level in TYYÇ ) is an academically-oriented programme giving access to degree and non-degree research programme and professional practice demanding high levels of knowledge and skills. Learning and Teaching Methods
The most frequently used instructional methods of the educational programmes of Nigde University are given below. Programmes commonly apply these methods as appropriate instructional approaches in accordance with their aims and objectives.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
The graduates of the programme can work in the municipalities, special provincial administrations, environmental and urban ministry, the ministry of public institutions, and the ministry of forest and water which are responsible for all the solutions and supervisions of all types of environmental problems caused by human activity. They can also work for wide variety of industries and organizations that are forming air pollutions, waste water and solid waste and looking for resolution of these issues. There are many private sectors that produce treatment systems and / or develop technology in this area, treatment technology and organizations in various fields and levels in which our graduates can be helpful.
Since in many industrial and agricultural sectors require to comply with environmental standards developed for the solution of environmental problems such as the world’s global warming, air pollution, water pollution, solid waste pollution, the graduates can be responsible in various positions such as security experts, environmental officers and field assistants. Moreover they can register on an academic career as well as master's degree and doctoral degree programmes of universities in Turkey or abroad.

Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of first cycle programme, students may apply to master’s degree (second cycle) and in some cases, to doctorate (third cycle) degree programmes in or related fields of ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING programmes taking into account their undergraduate (first cycle degree) achievement level and the scores on the subject-specific entrance examinations of the Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) centrally administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Within the framework of the national regulations, regulations endorsed by the senate of each university determine the weight of ALES Examination results in the overall evaluation of candidates. Depending on the institutions’ regulations, for some programmes to be accessed, a certain level of foreign language proficiency is also required.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The methods applied for assessment of the achievement of the expected programme learning outcomes for the entire programme of Environmental Engineering are shown below and those for the individual course units are given in the relevant section of the course description with their contribution to the final grades.
The success of students in achieving the expected learning outcomes of the each course unit within the curriculum of Environmental Engineering programme is evaluated via assessments of in-term activities and final examination which takes place at the end of each semester.
Assessment of in-term activities includes a minimum number of a mid-term examination, homework and a short-exam (quiz) as compulsory assessment methods for all the course units within all degree programmes defined by the Regulations. The programmes are encouraged to define more assessment methods for the in-term activities depending on their needs for measuring the achievements of the outcomes at the programme and course unit levels in order to ensure the educational aims and objectives. The nature and number of the assessment methods used for each course unit together with their contribution to the final grades are given under the title of “Assessment and Grading” in the sections of course descriptions. These arrangements are announced in advance, at the beginning of each semester and published in the sections of the course descriptions on this web site.
Mid-term and final examinations are conducted in dates, places and times determined and announced by the University. The students’ final semester grades given by their instructors are based on mid-term examination, homework evaluation, short-examinations, final examination, and if there is any other assessment results, students’ compliance with attendance to the course activities is taken into account..
The contributions of the grades of the in-term activities and final exam grade to the final success grade of a course are determined by the course instructor and announced to students within the first two weeks of the semester. Moreover, the contribution of the final exam cannot be less than 40 % and higher than 60% for all the courses within all the degree programmes defined by the Regulations.
Course units, which do not require a mid-term, homework, short-exam and/or a final exam such as work placement, are determined by the administration of the related departments and specific assessment and grading methods for these courses are also announced through the same channels described above. Evaluation of such activities is made through the procedures defined by the Senate and assessed as Pass (P) or Fail (F) grades.
The success of a student for each assessment (in-term and final) defined for each course unit is evaluated by the instructor. Evaluations are made over a scale of 100 points and converted to the letter grades at the end of the semester taking into account the standard deviation of grades and grade point average of the class and using the relative evaluation method, principles of which have been set by the Senate.

Mode of Study
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering at Nigde University is a full time / face to face programme.
